BTC Options Market Daily Report

Executive Summary

BTC closed near 76.1k today, modestly higher on the day but still weaker week over week. Price remains below the 4h EMA20/50/100 stack and only above the EMA200, so the short-horizon repair has not yet turned into a durable trend. On the daily chart, BTC is still above EMA50/100/200, but it slipped back below EMA20, leaving the market in a “medium-term intact, short-term pressured” regime.

Volatility also stayed soft in absolute terms but is no longer making fresh lows. DVOL pulled back to 36.2%, still in a historically low band, while the surface showed a stronger front-end ATM recovery and still-rich put skew. In other words, the desk is pricing a short-dated repair attempt while continuing to pay for downside protection.

Structurally, 25 SEP remains the anchor expiry, and the 75k/78k/80k/82k area is still the core battleground. The main change today was flow: block/combo prints and net greeks turned more clearly into mid/long-end vega selling and gamma selling, cooling the more constructive vol tone from the prior session.

BTC’s close around 76.1k sits in the lower half of the monthly ATR range. It is below the upper trigger at 82.4k and above the lower trigger at 74.6k, which keeps price inside a range rather than in breakout mode. On the monthly swing ATR frame, the move has only consumed about 45% of the ATR band, so the market remains in a neutral-to-lower range context.

The 4h structure is weaker than the daily frame. BTC finished below the 4h EMA20/50/100 and only held above EMA200, while the daily chart remained above EMA50/100/200 but lost EMA20 again. That leaves spot with a medium-term base intact but a short-term repair that still lacks confirmation.

Implied vol surface

The surface remains upward-sloping overall, with near-dated IV below the back end, but the front-end ATM line repaired materially today and is now back near 40%. The term structure is still normal rather than inverted, so this is not a panic-style front-end vol blowout.

Wings remain rich, especially on the put side. The 18 SEP, 25 SEP, and 30 OCT expiries still show the steepest put skew, while call wings also firmed but less aggressively. That points to persistent demand for downside protection rather than a broad-based vol bid across all strikes.

DVOL index

DVOL printed 36.2%, down from 39.0% yesterday, but still within a low regime rather than a stressed one. The 1Y and 3M IV Rank / IV Percentile readings remain historically depressed, with the 3M band slightly firmer than the 1Y measure.

The takeaway is straightforward: volatility is still low, but it is no longer trending lower in a clean way. That usually supports spread and relative-value activity more than outright directional vol buying.

Options chain structure

Options chain · Open interest (calls & puts)
Expiration

Tap the dots: Expiration · Strike · Tenor

The options chain remains centered in the 8–30 day bucket, with 25 SEP still the structural gravity point. Open Interest (OI), traded volume, and greek exposure continue to cluster there, while 0DTE (expires same calendar day) and 1–7 day activity stayed active enough to matter for near-spot pricing.

By strike, 75k, 76k, 78k, 80k, and 82k remain the most important near-spot layers. The 75k put wall and 80k call wall are still valid, and 78k remains the clearest near-spot two-way battleground. Above that sit the 82k/85k/88k/90k supply layers; below spot, 74k/72k/70k remain the main protection zone.

By expiry, 25 SEP is still dominant, but 30 OCT, 25 DEC, and 26 MAR27 all saw more participation today, so flow is no longer concentrated only at the front end. For the desk, that matters: this is not just a short-dated gamma story; the middle and back end are now actively part of the pricing conversation.

24h net greeks moved to a more bearish vol posture: net delta stayed negative, net vega flipped materially negative, and net gamma also leaned negative. By expiry, 25 DEC, 30 OCT, and 27 NOV were clear vega sellers / gamma sellers, while 18 SEP remained a short-dated vega/gamma buyer. 25 SEP is still the center of the structure, but its flow is now more mixed than yesterday’s more constructive tone.

By strike, 80k was one of the clearest net sell-pressure nodes, while 74k stood out as a key short-dated gamma support area. That leaves near-spot pricing split between overhead supply and downside defense.

Across tenors, 0DTE (expires same calendar day) and 1–7 day activity stayed busy, but the curve-shaping force came from 8–30 day and 31–90 day vol selling. So today was not a simple front-end chase; it was a layered structure with short-dated demand and higher-Tenor bucket rollup supply coexisting.

Tap the dots: Block trades · Combo trades

Block and combo prints in the 24 hours through the report snapshot at 00:00 UTC on 2026-09-17 (rolling window, not the calendar report day).

The block/combo tape flipped into net vega selling and net gamma selling today, a clear shift from the more constructive bias seen previously. Block-only still made up the largest share of structures, but call spreads, strangles, and calendar/diagonal trades were prominent enough to show that the flow is being expressed through spreads and Tenor bucket rollup construction rather than just outright direction.

Key observations:

  • 25 SEP, 30 OCT, and 25 DEC structures showed a clear pickup in vega selling;
  • 18 SEP still carried short-dated vega/gamma buying;
  • The 80k, 88k, and 74k areas best captured the current “overhead supply plus downside defense” setup.

That lines up with the net greeks: mid/long-end vol supply returned, while short-dated protection remained alive. The tape reads more like traders selling richer vol than chasing it higher.

2. What Changed vs Prior Session(s)

The key change today is that spot only bounced modestly, but the 4h repair weakened again. That undermines yesterday’s impression that the short-term recovery was becoming more durable. The daily trend is still intact, but the 4h chart rolled back below EMA20/50/100, so near-term pressure remains in control.

On the options side, the prior session’s more net long vega / net long gamma tone gave way to more explicit mid/long-end vega selling and gamma selling. 25 DEC, 30 OCT, and 27 NOV all leaned more defensive, and DVOL fell from 39.0% to 36.2% without making a new structural low, which is more consistent with low-level repair than with volatility expansion.

The Tenor bucket rollup mix also broadened. Yesterday was more front-end centered; today saw more participation in 30 OCT, 25 DEC, and 26 MAR27. The market is now pricing the front end, the monthly core, and the back end together.

3. Multi-Day Context

The dominant weekly theme remains: BTC is still weak on the week, and every spot repair attempt has been fragile, though the higher-time-frame structure has not fully broken. On 9/14 the daily and 4h stacks reclaimed control, but 9/15 faded again, and today’s modest bounce followed by renewed 4h weakness fits that same pattern of incomplete repair.

The options market has evolved in parallel:

  • Earlier in the week, the desk was more responsive to short-end repair and vol buying;
  • Over the last two sessions, flow has increasingly rotated back to vol selling, especially in the mid and back end;
  • 25 SEP remains the structural center, so the week has not abandoned the main monthly anchor, but it has become more layered around it.

So today did not break the weekly narrative. It reinforced the idea of range-based pricing with layered Tenor bucket rollup supply and localized short-dated defense.

4. Key Levels and Risk Zones

  • First resistance: 80k, still the main call wall and a key sell-pressure node.
  • Next resistance: 82k / 85k, where 25 SEP and 2 OCT Open Interest (OI) remains significant.
  • First support: 75k, still the active put wall.
  • Secondary support: 74k / 72k, where short-dated gamma support is strongest.
  • Lower protection zone: 70k / 68k / 66k, where downside skew remains priced.

On the monthly ATR frame, spot remains between the 74.6k lower trigger and the 82.4k upper trigger. As long as BTC stays below the 4h EMA20/50/100 stack, the 80k call-supply narrative stays intact. If 75k breaks, then 74k and 72k become the next key price references for short-dated hedging.

5. Scenario Map for Next Session

Scenario 1: Range trading continues

If BTC keeps chopping around 75k–77k and remains below the 4h EMA20/50/100 stack, the options chain is likely to stay in a layered regime: mid/long-end vol supply with short-dated protection demand. In that case, 25 SEP should remain the center, with call supply above 80k and put protection below 75k.

Scenario 2: Spot repair returns

If BTC reclaims the 4h EMA20/50/100 stack, the short-term repair would regain credibility. That would likely shift attention back toward 78k–80k, and could revive short-dated call spread and gamma hedging demand.

Scenario 3: Range breaks lower

If BTC loses 75k and presses toward 74k/72k, short-dated put buying and gamma buying could expand again, and DVOL could move higher off the low base. In that case, the lower-spot structure around 25 SEP becomes materially more important.

What to monitor next session

  • Whether BTC can reclaim the 4h EMA20/50/100 stack;
  • Whether 75k holds and 74k becomes the new focal point;
  • Whether the 80k call wall continues to absorb supply;
  • Whether 25 SEP remains the main center of gravity;
  • Whether 30 OCT / 25 DEC keep leaning toward vega selling and gamma selling;
  • Whether DVOL transitions from low-level repair into a more defined rebound.

6. Trader Focus

  • Today was not a trend-confirmation day; it was a repricing day inside a range.
  • Mid/long-end vol supply has returned, but short-dated defense has not vanished.
  • 75k / 74k / 80k remain the three most important reference points.
  • 25 SEP is still the primary anchor, but 30 OCT and 25 DEC matter more now and should not be ignored.
  • If the 4h EMA stack cannot be reclaimed, the current setup should continue to be treated as vol selling plus range trading, not as a confirmed directional reversal.
